beCURIOUS! is the beHABIT! of adventure. Embracing beLIEVE! and beBRAVE! gives us the freedom to explore the world and rediscover the joy of learning. Have you ever witnessed the exhilaration on the face of a young child as they begin to learn about the world around them? THIS is what water feels like! THIS is how flowers smell! THIS is what birthday cake tastes like! It’s that kind of excitement and enthusiasm that we want to rekindle with beCURIOUS!
Burnout doesn’t only come from working too hard and not taking time to renew ourselves. It also stems from doing the same work over and over again. Working on the same accounts. Writing the same articles. Taking the same photographs. Even driving the same way to work every day, day in and day out. Routine is an important part of a balanced creative life. But when it becomes “comfortable misery,” routine can be a creativity killer.
Curiosity is the impulse to KNOW things, to think new thoughts, to search out answers to questions we’ve been asking ourselves for years. Curiosity is the pathway to creativity. It is the road less taken. It shakes up our routine and gives us a fresh perspective on work and life.
“The comfort of familiarity can be so alluring; even if it is not the best. I see countless people droning through their mundane lives, hanging on to their comfortable misery and blocking the thrill of new and unrealized but available successes.” – Dan Miller
There are few people in history who can overshadow the creative output of Walt Disney. Think about how different the world would be if he had never followed his inner curiosity. He is quoted as saying, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Curiosity continually propelled him to keep asking questions. It lead him down unexpected roads of discovery. It was central to everything he eventually accomplished.
beCURIOUS! extends a challenge for us to fight mundane routine. We do not need to be satisfied with the status quo. If we will just begin to ask a few more questions and then ferret out the answers, who knows what new paths we might find ourselves exploring?
